MADISON, Wis. (From news reports) - A federal court has ruled in favor of the State of Wisconsin in a Fox River cleanup case.

Wisconsin and the federal government filed suit saying P.H. Glatfelter owes $33 million in un-reimbursed costs for cleaning up pollution of the river.

State and federal agencies have been fighting for 25 years to hold companies responsible for Fox River contamination.

Several companies dumped industrial chemicals, widely known as PCBs, into the river during the 1960s and 1970s.

The judge's decision reads:

"Here, there is no doubt that the Plaintiffs will continue to incur response costs in the future. Glatfelter's liability has already been determined by the court, and the Plaintiffs should not be forced to incur further costs and delay in attempting to collect future costs. Unlike the other defendants, Glatfelter has not entered into a settlement agreement with the Plaintiffs for the current Site. Under these circumstances, I conclude that the Plaintiffs' request for declaratory relief should be granted."

The state expects the "main part" of cleanup will be complete by 2019.

The DOJ says $1.3 billion has gone into cleanup of the Fox River.

The case was decided in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
