Crews battle hog fuel blaze at Clearwater mill

LEWISTON, Idaho (From the Lewiston Tribune) -- A hog fuel fire at Clearwater Paper was contained quickly Friday afternoon, 20 June 2015.

The fire in the East Lewiston mill's fuel pile for the No. 4 boiler started about 2:15 p.m. and was under control within an hour, said Matt Van Vleet, a spokesman for Clearwater Paper in Spokane.

No one was injured, and production at the mill was not interrupted by the blaze, Van Vleet said.

The fuel, a woody biomass, is used to make steam and electricity for the plant. Van Vleet didn't have an estimate for the value of the fuel that was lost in the incident.

The cause of the fire, he said, was most likely equipment-related.

Clarkston Fire Department acting Chief Pat Emerich said one fire truck with four firefighters from his department assisted Clearwater Paper's fire crews.

Idaho Forest Group, which operates an adjacent lumber mill, brought a water truck, Van Vleet said, and another Lewiston business, Western Construction, brought a truck and water cannon.

Emerich praised Clearwater Paper employees for catching the fire early and getting water on it immediately on a breezy Friday afternoon.

"Wind will always make those fuel pile fires way more serious," he said. "The quick alert is the key."

Bulldozers were being used Friday afternoon to move sections of the pile in an attempt to find any smoldering pockets, Emerich said, and Clearwater Paper crews were expected to monitor the area throughout the night.
