Catalyst Paper temporarily idling machine at mill

Catalyst Paper announced this week that it is temporarily halting one of three paper machines at its Powell River mill, removing capacity of 6,500 metric tons of specialty paper grades from the market.

The move reflects the company's strategy to match production with domestic market demand and inventory, the company said.

The Powell River No.9 paper machine will be idled on 31 October 2014 for a period of three weeks, with additional downtime possible based on market demands.

Catalyst said that it is working with employees to mitigate the potential for seasonal layoffs.

"We continue our focus of matching production to customer orders," said president and chief executive officer, Joe Nemeth. "This curtailment is not expected to impact existing customer orders."

Catalyst Paper manufactures specialty mechanical printing papers, newsprint and pulp. Its customers include retailers, publishers and commercial printers in North America, Latin America, the Pacific Rim and Europe.

With three mills located in British Columbia, the Richmond, BC-based company has a combined annual production capacity of 1.5 million metric tons.
