Board visits

In my column last week, I asked, "Despite my admonishments, how important do you think board visits are?"

Two thirds responded "Extremely important," 16.7 percent said "Important," 16.7 percent replied "Somewhat important," and no one answered "Slightly important" or "Not at all important."

Next, I asked, "They say comedy is born in tragedy. Do you have any tragic board visit experiences you wish to share? The rest of us may find them humorous!"

Responses:

>We were working on an upgrade of a small facility in Brazil. They accidentally left the CFO, a board member of the company, to tour the work with one of the more honest members of the team. Shortly thereafter we had the Senior VP on site for as long as he could stand it.

>The owner wanted to come in the mill on Christmas eve because he knew that maintenance was working and he wanted to wish them Merry Christmas. When he showed at guard house he was turned down by security guard. When back to head office he wanted to have this security officer fired. Instead after thought he sent him a thank-you letter not to let anyone enter his facility that easy.

>When the VIP's entered the dry end control room one commented how clean the machine was. The backtender who was a great operator, real nice guy and who really cared about the company had another talent of stirring the pot. He answered oh, so you want to see a s__hole lets go to the basement.. To this day he doesn't understand all the attention he got later!
