Blast at paper mill in Malerkotla, India leaves 3 dead, 19 injured

INDIA (From The Indian Express) -- Three people died and nineteen were injured on Monday after a high intensity blast at Vishal Paper Mill on Dhuri Road of Malerkotla.

Seven workers who were critically injured were transported to hospitals in Patiala and Ludhiana. The rest were admitted at Civil Hospital, Malerkotla.

The three deceased were identified as Manu Kumar, Narinder Kumar and Prem Kumar.

As per eye witnesses, a paper dryer exploded at around 10 am when work had just started inside the mill.

Five critically injured workers were taken to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. One each were referred to CMCH Ludhiana and ESI Hospital Ludhiana. The police claimed that none of the victims are ready to record the statements against the mill owner and thus no FIR (First Information Report) has been registered.

Sanjiv Goyal, SHO Amargarh police station told The Indian Express, "We have recorded statement of each victim separately but no one is ready to say anything against owners. They are just saying that it all happened accidentally. Three people have died and we have filed inquest proceedings under section 174 of CrPC till now. The owner of the mill Krishan Mohan Gupta is abroad and laborers themselves were handling the work."

SP Malerkotla Gurpreet Sikand said that police is investigating the case. "We may file FIR against owners taking cognizance of the matter but only after proper investigation."
